Activities: Cycle riding, routes and cycling tours

cycling in the Algarve, PortugalThe Algarve provides such a great range of scenery that cycling is one of the best ways of getting around and seeing all of the sights.

Our choice of routes are suitable for both occasional cyclists who enjoy shorter distances and flat cycle routes away from traffic, as well as more demanding routes for more experienced cyclists who relish the challenge of a few hills. Depending upon your preferences, you could cover anything from 20-35km in a day (2-4 hours of cycling), leaving plenty of time to stop off along the way, take photos, enjoy some wonderful sightseeing or just have a leisurely lunch.

We can provide a choice of guided cycling days with a choice of routes to match your fitness levels and requirements.

We’ll get you fixed up with a decent quality trekking or mountain bike and a helmet from our local hire shop and then we are ready to go.

Day 1 Down to the coast!

This circuit starts out heading north and over the hills to the neighbouring town of Paderne with a visit to the ruined castle, then heading west to Tunes and Alvor, before heading south and down to the coast. There are plenty of places to visit along this stretch of coastline and opportunity for a swim in the sea. Heading east past the new marina at Albufeira and through the old town before heading further along the coast and out of the tourist areas, before heading back inland and returning to the hotel.

Around 30km in total of moderately easy cycling.

Day 2 Taking to the hills

Heading north from the hotel into the hills enjoying some splendid views as we go, we eventually reach the pretty hill top town of Querenca, where there are a couple of cafes for a well earned drink or snack. Then heading north through the Fonte de Benemola nature park to the town of Salir where pleasant views from the ruined castle walls can be enjoyed. On from Salir we head west towards Alte taking in a detour to the Rocky outcrop of Rocha da Pena. Upon reaching Alte, there are tourist shops and an interesting church to visit and also places to have a swim if weather permits. Upon leaving Alte, we head over the hills before crossing the flat and fertile valley on the way to Paderne. Then its up and over the hills and back into Boliqueime.

Around 40 km of moderate cycling with plenty of hills but nothing too strenuous.

Algarve cycling holidaysDay 3 Tour of the Golf resorts

This circuit takes us towards a different section of coast to Day 1, heading East first of all towards Vilamoura, where you can cruise around the marina looking at the expensive Yachts. Leaving Vilamoura, we pass through Quarteira, unless it is market day, in which case it may be worth stopping for a quick look around, and head on to the luxurious golf resorts of Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago. There are plenty of beach bars and cafes to stop at for refreshments and also a swim if required. We then head north towards Almancil, calling in on the famous church at San Laurenco before heading on north to the old market town of Loule. It is well worth having a look around Loule before heading west back towards Boliqueime, avoiding the main roads wherever possible and using the quieter hill top roads where the occasional bar or café may tempt us to stop for a drink and admire the scenery!

Around 35 km of moderately easy cycling with just a few hills.

Note:- a 7 night cycling tour can include these circuits plus similar or extensions to these circuits.

Newly available from Activity Algarve in 2008, we have put together a comprehensive cycling package to enable you to get the most out of the new Algarve Coastal Cycle Route called Ecovia do Litoral.
