Activities: Mountain Biking Holidays and MTB Tours

Just a small distance inland from the coast are a range of hills that provide a wonderful Algarve mountain biking arena. There are dirt track roads, challenging single track paths along riverbanks, remote villages and splendid scenery to enjoy on your mountain bike tour.

Our choice of mountain bike tours are suitable for both relative novices as well as regular mtb riders who relish the challenge of some big hills and tricky tracks. Depending upon your preferences, you could cover anything from 20-35km on your MTB tour (2-4 hours of cycling), leaving plenty of time to stop off along the way, take photos, enjoy some wonderful sightseeing or just have a leisurely lunch.

We can provide a choice of mountain bike tours with routes to match your fitness levels and requirements.

We'll get you fixed up with a good quality Trek mountain bike and a helmet from the premier mountain bike hire store in the central Algarve region.

Mtb Tours

If you have already booked your holiday accommodation in the Algarve or are visiting friends or family and would like to book a mountain bike tour with Activity Algarve, this service is also available. We can provide you and your group with a half or full day tour, including collection from your accommodation in central Algarve region and mtb hire. Typical Activity Algarve Mountain Bike Tours

Paderne Castle and Riverside Paths

This circuit starts out heading north and over the hills to the neighbouring town of Paderne famous for its old hill top castle. After a quick circuit of the old town, we head down the dirt tracks to the historic Paderne Castle. Taking a slight detour across the river we find a narrow rocky footpath along the river bank which leads us to the old Roman Bridge. Leaving the Bridge, we follow a challenging single track all the way along the river bed back to Boliqueime. This is a moderately challenging day of mountain biking and one that is worth taking the camera along for, you will find plenty of great photo opportunities along the way! There is also a great little bar just down the road from the hotel where a well earned beer can be enjoyed.

Around 35km in total of moderately challenging mountain biking.

Abandoned Village

Heading north from the hotel into the hills enjoying some splendid views as we go, we head downa long dirt track road to the river. Here we follow a narrow riverside footpath that leads downstream through beautiful secenery and woodland. When we eventually emerge into open countryside, we cross the river and head further inland to remote villages where we can see how the old Algarveans live. The we climb up dirt track roads in search of the abandoned village of Rocha Amarela. Abandoned in the late 1960s, when Tourism started to take off in the Algarve, the inhabitants decided it would be better to try and earn a living on the coast rather than to carry on their struggle to live off the land. Although some of the houses have begun to crumble, we can still see the village much as it was nearly 50 years ago. Leaving the village, we can head downhill and back towards Boliqueime or head further inland to the beautiful hillside town of Alte. Upon leaving Alte, there is a nice flat run back across the valley towards Paerne and then a number of routes back to Boliquime.

Up to 50km of reasonably challenging mountain biking.
